The Buchan Caves Reserve offers you more than cave exploring. If you're looking for a days outing, then consider wearing your hiking boots and venture out on some scenic bushwalks, from easy 0.5km to more challenging 4km walks.
The Visitor Information Centre at the Reserve has plenty of pamphlets, maps and information on all the walks listed below.
Location: Buchan Caves
Distance: 0.5km
Duration: about 30 minutes
This is a short walk that gives you a birds eye view of the entire Buchan Caves Reserve. You'll pass by Moon Cave and you'll be able to explore the entrance if you bring a torch.
Keep following the track and you will go past the Devils Punchbowl, where an old cave system has collapsed. Continue on up the hill and you'll be able to view the entire limestone valley that houses the Buchan Caves.
If you're feeling energetic you can continue further and join up with the Northern Arm Track which will take you back to the Campground. It'll take you another 30 minutes.
Location: Buchan Caves
Distance: 3km
Duration: about 1.5 hours
This walk actually goes in two directions. It splits into two with both tracks taking you to the Spring Creek Falls.
You can either take the Tea Tree Track or the lower Kanooka Track. Be aware that there are some steep areas leading up to the falls.
It's best to take the lower Kanooka Track on the way back down, as it criss-crosses the creek bed and takes you via beautiful ferns and kanooka trees. Keep your eyes open for Lyrebirds, Kookaburras, water dragons and king parrots.
Location: Buchan Caves
Distance: 4km
Duration: about 2.5 hours
This track, is of course signposted and is one of the most challenging walks in the Buchan Reserve.
As you make your way through tall timber and moss covered gullies, the track gets quite steep in some places. However, you are rewarded with magnificent views of the Buchan Valley and abundant wildlife.
Location: Buchan Caves
Distance: 2km
Duration: about 1 hour
This is a walk dedicated to Frederick Wilson who was one of the people who put the Buchan Caves on the map, back in the early 1900s.
It begins 100m from the Visitor Centre and follows the Royal Cave exit track, then ends at the Fairy Cave entrance. It's a great walk to include when you're actually going inside the Fairy Cave and Federal Cave.
